To Lady Kenmure - While Exiled at Aberdeen
My Very Honorable and Dear Lady,
Grace, mercy, and peace be to you.
I cannot forget your Ladyship, and that sweet child. I desire to hear what the Lord is doing to you and him. To write to me were charity. I cannot but write to my friends, that Christ [...]

John Carrick’s The Imperative of Preaching is a gem of an introduction to redemption history’s (biblical theology’s) implications for Christian preaching. The first five chapters are particularly helpful in these ways:
Carrick introduced well the interrelations and biblical-theological implications of the indicative and the imperative moods.
Also, his thoughts on the exclamative mood are helpful for thinking [...]

I really enjoyed reading Graeme Goldsworthy’s Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture for two main reasons:
First, he does a good job at introducing the basics of biblical theology ( i.e. What is BT? What does it look like? Why is it important?) in a non-technical way and with an eye for why BT [...]

Reforming Pastoral Ministry is a collection of essays written by (mostly) Reformed baptist pastors with the goal of encouraging younger pastors toward Scriptural reformation and revival. The book is supposed to be a modern rendition of Richard Baxter’s classic work, The Reformed Pastor. As a third year Presbyterian seminarian looking to enter the pastoral ministry, [...]

We Christians get into trouble when we forget the context in which we still live–we are not yet in heaven. Until then, we sojourn in this present evil age. Accordingly, we must constantly tear down false expectations of perfect completeness, the absence of sin, brokenness, and pain, etc., even in the relationships and activities of [...]

What is the difference between Dr. Phil and Christianity’s Gospel? Not much (sadly!) in many explanations of Christianity. But in the Sacred Scriptures, the two could not be further apart! For, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is by faith alone; Dr. Phil-type behaviorism is by works alone. The one is law and gospel, the other [...]

Speaking of why adult men don’t go to church, one pastor makes a poignant observation:
The [mixed martial arts] fights [in Vegas] were sold out and all fifteen thousand seats were filled.
The sport has exploded and is selling out arenas all around the
country. With the UFC also recently buying out the Pride Fighting
Championships league, the sport [...]

I’ve tried to be kind to Osteen, but listening to sermons like this one…
…in which Osteen exhorts his parishioners to tap into the inward joy that is inside of them by singing happy songs, “whistling while you work,” etc., without any reference to the Gospel (Jesus’ incarnation, life, death, resurrection, ascension, and present reign according [...]

Peter, the one whose cross-shaped calling was unfolded to him through the ebbs and flows of sinning, repenting, believing, and walking with the Master, exhorts us that to follow the footsteps of Jesus is to walk the way of the cross: For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, [...]
